Against the background of the Black Death and the religious and social responses to its consequences,
Sweden's premiere film maker, Ingmar Bergman, pits a medieval knight in a game of chess with Death.
Their symbolic battle explores the human condition in a world seemingly devoid of either a loving God
or benign Nature. This film won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated
for the Palme d'Or Prize.
