Reading a Bead Spec Sheet Before Ordering
How to read stated dimensions, hole size, finish, batch variation, quantities and manufacturer certificates on a bead specification sheet before ordering.

A specification sheet answers four practical questions: what the item measures, what will pass through it, how the surface will hold up, and how much of it arrives. Everything else on the page is either a restatement of those four or a claim that needs a test. Read the sheet as a set of constraints to verify, not as a description to trust.
What do dimensions, hole size and finish really tell you on a specification sheet?
Stated dimensions are nominal. A bead listed at 6 mm is a target, not a measurement, and the tolerance band is the number that matters. Manufacturers who publish tolerances usually express them as a range, such as 6.0 mm plus or minus 0.2 mm, and that band decides whether a strand will sit flat in a woven row or drift. When no tolerance appears, treat the figure as approximate and plan a test order before committing to a project quantity.
Hole size is the constraint most often misread. A 0.8 mm hole does not accept 0.8 mm of material. The passage must clear the thread, the needle, the return pass and any knot. A working rule is to leave roughly a quarter of the hole free after the thickest element passes through, which means a 0.8 mm hole suits a 0.4 mm thread with a fine needle and little else. Hole size also varies with finish: a coated or lined bead can close slightly, and a galvanized or plated surface adds a thin layer inside the channel. a bead reference for hole sizes that groups sizes, shapes and finishes side by side makes the comparison faster than reading each listing alone, because the same nominal size from two manufacturers rarely measures the same.
Finish describes both appearance and durability, and the two are separate. A matte, an iridescent, a metallic or a luster finish changes how light leaves the surface. Durability concerns how long that surface survives friction, skin oils, sunlight and cleaning. Sheets that name a coating, a dye lot or a plating process are giving you a durability clue. Sheets that name only a color are not. Ask what the finish is made of, not what it looks like.
Why do batches vary, and how do you plan a project around that variation?
Batches vary because glass, dye, coating and tooling all drift. A glass rod pulled on a different day can shift in tone. A dye bath mixed to the same recipe can land a shade away from the previous run. A coating line can deposit a slightly thicker layer. Tooling wears, so a bead pressed from an older mold may run a fraction larger. None of this is a defect; it is the normal spread of a manufactured material.
The practical response is to buy the whole project from one batch and to record the batch or lot number when the seller provides one. If a project needs more than one order, order the overage at the start rather than in the middle. A common planning figure is ten to fifteen percent extra for breakage, sorting and color matching, and more when the design depends on a tight tonal match across many units.
Sorting is part of the method, not a correction. Lay the batch out under the light the finished piece will live in, group by tone, and distribute the groups evenly across the work instead of using them in the order they arrive. When a batch runs short, a substitution is safer if the replacement shares the same nominal size, hole size and finish family, because those three govern how the piece assembles. Color is the visible variable; size and hole are the structural ones.
What does a manufacturer certificate prove, and what does it leave to you to test?
A manufacturer certificate is a statement by the maker about a defined property of a defined lot. It can confirm composition, a treatment, an origin claim or a test result, and it is only as strong as the standard it cites. A certificate that names a test method and a lot number is checkable. A certificate that names neither is a marketing document.
What a certificate does not do is verify the individual unit in your hand. It does not prove that the hole in this bead clears your needle, that the coating survives your wear, or that the color matches the strand you bought last year. Those are bench tests. Thread a sample, work a small swatch, wear it, wash it if the piece will be washed, and look at it again after a week. The certificate covers the lot; the sample covers your use.

It will not tell you which bead to buy, but it will tell you what a stated unit means.
How should quantities be read on a listing?
Quantity is stated in units that are not always comparable. Some listings sell by the strand, some by the gram, some by the piece, some by the tube. A strand of small seed beads may hold far more units than a strand of large rounds at the same price, so the useful comparison is cost per usable bead, not cost per strand.
Convert before comparing. Weigh or count a small purchase, note the count per gram or per strand, and use that figure to estimate the project. Account for waste: beads that arrive chipped, off-size or unusable reduce the effective count. When a listing gives a weight and a nominal size but no count, the count is an estimate, and the estimate should be treated as a lower bound.
Reordering is easier when the listing carries a lot number and the seller keeps it on file. Without a lot number, a reorder is a new batch, and the color match is a gamble. Record the number with the project notes.
What should be checked before the order is placed?
Work through the sheet in a fixed order. Confirm the nominal size and the tolerance. Confirm the hole size and test the thread and needle combination against it. Confirm the finish and what it is made of. Confirm the quantity unit and convert it to a usable count. Confirm whether a lot number is published and whether the seller will hold it. Confirm what any certificate actually states and which standard it cites.
If a sheet leaves any of those blank, the gap is the risk. A small test order resolves more of it than a longer description, and a written note of what arrived, measured and counted, turns the next order into a comparison instead of a guess. The sheet is a starting document; the sample is the evidence.
A bead spec sheet and an exhibition share the same discipline: both ask the reader to trust stated facts over first impressions. Where the sheet lists hole size, finish and batch variation, a programmer reads room rhythm, the dialogue between works and honest observation, the method set out in reading an exhibition as a season. The two pages meet at the same question: what does the document promise, and what will the room actually deliver once the order is placed?
